Mat vs. Table: the Similarities and Differences
-
Thai Mat Massage
Thai mat sessions are on a 7x4’ floor mat and utilize rhythmic compressions and gentle assisted stretching/range of motion movements. The pressure is effective whether deep or superficial. As these are on a floor mat, the therapist is on all four limbs leaning her body weight and using gravity as the signal for pressure depth. This is traditionally a clothed modality and done dry (without oil) or with salve on key joints. Typical positions include laying on your back, sides (very common) and stomach (less common as it isn’t comfortable for the neck during extended periods). The therapist flows around the mat administering dynamic, rhythmic compressions with stretching and static neuromuscular techniques.
Thai is recommended for:
Stiff Body
Chronic pain
Back/hip pain
Side-lying sessions
Gentle therapeutic pressure (light or deep)
Athletes
Deep pressure lovers
Movement lovers
People over 6ft tall/200lbs

Table Massage
Table sessions are on a standard 32x73” massage table with draping and generally include oil. The pressure is supportive whether deep or superficial. The therapist uses the fingers, palms, knuckles, forearms and elbows for gliding and static techniques. Typical positions include laying on your stomach, back and each side (although less common, side-lying position is helpful to work the backside of the body if you aren’t comfortable on your stomach or with your face in the cradle or if you are pregnant). The therapist flows around the table using dynamic Swedish strokes to connect neuromuscular and fascial techniques.
Table sessions are recommended for:
Those comfortable with their head in the cradle
Back focus
Neck and head focus
Facial massage
Oil lovers
Cranial sacral focused session
A more passive, silent and still experience (Thai sessions include more positioning)

All Sessions
All sessions encourage breath awareness and are holistic in nature. They are aimed towards balancing the systems of the body, inspiring flexibility, revitalizing energy and overall, leaving you feeling more comfortable in your body. Pressure can be deep or superficial and flow static or dynamic. The potential influences to experience in any given session include Thai compression and stretching, neuromuscular, trigger point, structural integration, fascial clearing, chi nei tsang abdominal, biodynamic cranial sacral, shiatsu and Swedish therapies.
